My role (Design Director) has been to build out the design function within the broader tech team. I’ve been responsible for hiring, structuring the design team, shaping product design frameworks, and establishing processes and methodologies.

Following the initial effort to establish a team, comprising researchers, animators/prototypers, UX and UI designers, and design managers, we’ve been able to settle into a consistent rhythm that allows us to maintain efficiency without compromising on design quality.

My role (Design Lead) was to build out and support the design function. I was responsible for hiring, structuring the design team, shaping product frameworks, and establishing processes and methodologies.

I tasked our team with building out our pattern libraries and design systems to support over 50 clients and several custom products and SKUs.

This was end-to-end product delivery.

This is all a bit of a wank, but what I’ve realised over the past few years is that our industry (Product Design) is beginning to segregate based on sector and industry experience, rather than focusing on hiring talented designers and then teaching them the industry.

I would never turn down an applicant with limited experience in “my” industry. However, this seems to be the world we’re moving towards.
